Led by baritone saxophonist Leigh Pilzer, Seven Pointed Star is one of the region’s hottest new jazz groups and features some of the most accomplished jazz women on the planet. Their program will feature arrangements of Pilzer originals, jazz standards and selections from the Great American Songbook. The septet features longtime D.C. luminaries Amy K Bormet on piano, Amy Shook on bass, and Jen Krupa on trombone along with area newcomers Mercedes Beckman on alto saxophone and Ally Hany Albrecht on trumpet. Internationally known drummer Sherrie Maricle of Diva Jazz Orchestra fame is the special guest. Maricle also performs with the New York Pops and has been the music director and drummer for Broadway star Maurice Hines. International touring artist, composer and bandleader Jamie Baum hits the DMV with a killer band: trumpeter Jason Palmer, pianist Andy Milne, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Jeff Hirshfield. Nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as “Flutist of the Year” a dozen times and the recipient of a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship, she has won too many awards to list here. Baum has toured 35 countries, performing with renowned artists such as Paul Motian, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell, Kenny Barron, Dave Douglas, Fred Hersch, Roy Hargrove, Louis Cole, Leni Stern, Anthony Braxton, and Wadada Leo Smith. On the jazz faculty at the Manhattan School of Music since 2006, she is a clinician for Altus Flutes/KHS America. Baum performs in many styles and leads the globally influenced Septet+. In this show she leads the Short Stories band, inspired by eloquent compositions of icons such as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk - influential to her development as a composer and improviser. International touring artist, composer and bandleader Jamie Baum hits the DMV with a killer band: trumpeter Jason Palmer, pianist Andy Milne, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Jeff Hirshfield. Nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as “Flutist of the Year” a dozen times and the recipient of a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship, she has won too many awards to list here. Baum has toured 35 countries, performing with renowned artists such as Paul Motian, Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell, Kenny Barron, Dave Douglas, Fred Hersch, Roy Hargrove, Louis Cole, Leni Stern, Anthony Braxton, and Wadada Leo Smith. On the jazz faculty at the Manhattan School of Music since 2006, she is a clinician for Altus Flutes/KHS America. Baum performs in many styles and leads the globally influenced Septet+. In this show she leads the Short Stories band, inspired by eloquent compositions of icons such as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk - influential to her development as a composer and improviser.
